What are the benefits of an aluminium-framed conservatory roof replacement, over a timber-frame?

Our Guardian Warm Roof solutions are always designed using an aluminium frame to support the roof elements, from the insulation layer to the tiled finish. But what are the advantages of using this modern material; over more a traditional timber stud approach?

Aluminium frames are lighter weight

When retrospectively fitting a warm roof on a conservatory, considering weight is key. If you fit a heavier roof, you risk the walls— that were originally designed to support a certain amount of weight— bowing under the new structure, undermining their integrity and putting it at risk of total collapse.

The aluminium frame of the Guardian Warm Roof has been expertly engineered to be extremely strong yet lightweight. This means it can replace an entire existing conservatory roof without adding excessive weight or requiring additional structural work to support it (which can add significant extras to the overall project cost!)

Aluminium frames are more durable

Despite its light weight, aluminium is an inherently strong and durable material. It provides excellent weather resistance, with no risk of warping, rotting, or rusting. This means it will last a long time with virtually no upkeep to retain its quality. Unlike timber, there is also no risk of shrinkage over time, preventing undue stress on the conservatory walls.

As well as providing peace of mind that your conservatory and everything inside it will remain safe and sound, it also means your investment in your home and the potential value it has added is well protected. For absolute confidence, we offer a 10-year product warranty with our Guardian Warm Roof.

Aluminium frames allow for a higher degree of accuracy when installed

Unlike timber, which can have natural imperfections, aluminium is a solid, engineered material. Using it within our Guardian Warm Roof allows us to deliver a high quality solution on each and every project. We precisely manufacture each of our warm roofs to meet your exact project requirements and pre-assemble them under controlled factory conditions. This ensures complete accuracy and quality before it is delivered, guaranteeing that the roof will fit perfectly.

This modern approach combined with the experience and expertise of your Guardian Certified Installer, supports a fast and predictable build — with the average installation taking just 3-4 days. This pre-assembled nature of the solution also ensures all fixings are correctly located and installed.

Aluminium frames can support an energy efficient roof

A criticism of some aluminium framed warm roofs is that because aluminium is less thermally efficient than timber, it will allow more heat loss. Whilst this would be true for systems where the structural system is left exposed and untreated, in a Guardian Warm Roof construction, the aluminium frame is covered with a triple layer of high performance insulation. The result is one of the most well insulated warm roofs on the market with a U-value as low as 0.15 W/m2K.

As well as meeting the current Building Regulations, this high thermal performance means that heat will be better retained within the conservatory in cooler months, reducing the amount of heating (and money!) needed to keep it at a comfortable temperature. It also helps to limit heat gains during the summer.

We also include slots in the ring and ridge beams enable air to flow freely through the roof, preventing any condensation build up.

We have explored this in more detail in our previous blog on ‘How much can I save on heating with a solid conservatory roof?
