Home extensions can offer families of all shapes and sizes space to get more enjoyment out of their home— whether it’s a dedicated area to deal with the washing load or a complete reconfiguration of the ground floor to embrace open plan living. However, this addition to your home’s footprint can have you wondering how it will contribute to your heating and cooling bills? When developing the Guardian Home Extension, a highly insulated shell was a key priority for our team ensuring rooms that are efficient and cost-effective to keep warm and comfortable without giving over valuable floor space to massively thick layers of insulation. We achieved this by combining high quality components and production approaches.
Guardian Warm Walls feature innovative Kingspan TEK structural insulated panels (SIPs). Used to build whole houses, this advanced building technology is made from a highly insulated core which is sandwiched between two layers of oriented strand board (OSB). These are designed to fit together with an enhanced jointing system that ensures a tight fix with no gaps where heated air can leak out, or cold external air can leak in.
Guardian Warm Wall can comfortably achieve a thermal performance U-value of 0.18 W/m2K once fully constructed with external and internal finishes. This meets the thermal performance requirements of the Building Regulations across the UK and ensures a space that cab be heated quickly and more affordably than most typical brick and mortar extensions.
What’s more, thanks to their excellent insulation performance, Guardian Warm Walls can be a lot slimmer than traditional brick walls. This can allow for additional internal floor space within a given footprint. For example, we estimate that on a typical 5 x 4 m extension, you can gain 20% more internal floorspace.
To finish the extension’s ‘envelope,’ the Guardian Home Extension uses the Guardian Warm Roof System. This features a triple layer of insulation and can achieve a U-value of 0.15 W/m2K or 0.12 W/m2K – one the lowest in the industry. It has also been independently tested by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to certify it can effectively manage condensation risk.
